Gingerbread decorating

We got some giant gingerbread men at Costco and Dylan invited some of his friends to come over and decorate them with him.

Carter - 11 months

I really can't believe that Carter is 11 months old already. The year has flown by. Carter had his first trip to the ER just before he turned 11 months old. In a moment of inattention he was across the room and using the oven to stand up. He put his hand on the bottom of the oven door (it was closed!) and burnt one of his hands. Matt took him to the ER. It was a quick trip that were gone and back in an hour. The hand is healing very well now.
Weight 9.8Kg

Alebrijes

This year the Alebrijes were displayed on a street in Roma. After we walked the street looking at these crazy creatures we stopped for lunch at Tamales y algo mas. Dylan loves tamales.

Dia de los Muertos

Again this year we joined the Newcomers tour for Dia de los Muertos. Lynda does so much work before the tour visiting sites to see which ones are the best. This year Matt was able to join us.

Our first stop was the Dolores Olmedo museum. www.museodoloresolmedo.org.mx The museum had a visiting exhibition of works from France so the theme for the Dia de los muertos was the City of Lights. You could have spent the whole day at the museum. They had stands selling food and crafts. While we were there there was a marionet show and we saw people arriving for a costume competition.

After the museum we visited the house of Indio Fernandez. Emilio Fernandez was a well known Mexican actor, screenwriter and director. The altars in the house were dedicated to people of the acting and screen world.

Dylan had his face painted with a murcielago (a bat). photo IMG_1462800x533_zpsecaf7ef4.jpg photo IMG_1464533x800_zpsb0f3e5a3.jpg

The final stop was The Museum of Popular Cultures. This proved to be the most challenging part of the tour (we traveled in a convoy of cars) as the musuem is very close to the center of Coyoacan and parking was difficult to find. Here we got to see some of the zinc etchings Jose Guadelupe Posada. The etchings of calaveras were meant to satirize the life of the upper classes during the reign of Porfirio Díaz. Most of his imagery was meant to make a religious or satirical point. Since his death, however, his images have become associated with the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, the "Day of the Dead". There was also a market selling food and crafts related to the day. photo IMG_1468800x533_zpsa2ecb186.jpg photo IMG_1469533x800_zps14fd4128.jpg photo IMG_1472533x800_zpse5b7d1c7.jpg photo IMG_1476800x533_zpsbd31d19b.jpg photo IMG_1480800x533_zps7dc15b2f.jpg

Before heading back to the car we had to stop off for some hot Churros. photo IMG_1486800x533_zps4493077d.jpg
