Trip to the Jamaica and San Juan Markets - April 2012

In April we joined a group from the Newcomers Club to visit the Jamaica market and the San Juan market. The Jamaica market is best known for its flowers and plants but the market also has groceries, produce, meat and prepared food.  The San Juan market has been described as a 'gourmand's paradise'.  The market has fruit and vegetables many of which are difficult to find elsewhere in the city.  It also has meat, fish, cheeses, dried mushrooms and lots of imported items - from Thai curry paste to Spanish chorizo sausage.  The market also has lots of good food stands.  Dylan was getting tired and wriggly by the time we got to the San Juan market so no photos.

There was everything from bunches of a single type of flower to arrangements of roses and lilies to objects decorated with flowers. Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Dylan was not a fan of the mamey. I thought it was ok. It had a texture like an avocado.

Papalote

Recently (also back in March) we visited Papalote, the children's museum.  It was lots of fun.  There were a lot of screen based activities which didn't really interest Dylan but there were plenty of other things to look at and have a go at.

One of the first things we did was a little fishing practice.

I didn't get a picture but Dylan enjoyed the piano keys that you walked on to make music.

~Dylan enjoyed the hot air balloon.  For some time after the trip he talked about how Daddy pushed the button and made fire.

Bazaar Sabado

One fine Saturday morning (back in March) we headed out to see what the Bazaar Sabado is all about.

We arrived early so many of the vendors were still setting up.  First we checked out the art in the small plaza northeast of Plaza San Jacinto.  There were a few stalls set up selling toys and pottery at one end of this little plaza.  Dylan liked the trucks at one of the stands.  Matt and I liked the beautiful train at the same stand.  We ended up making a return visit to this stand to buy Dylan a truck.  We considered getting the train but in the end decided against it.  The woman at the stall told us that they only make ten of the trains each year.

We enjoyed some quesadillas, agua de jamaica, and agua de tamarindo inside the Bazaar.  There were lots of small stores inside that Bazaar that we looked at (no purchases this time around) and outside in the square even more art.
