New Fruits

Back in March I started trying some of the less familiar fruits and vegetables in the supermarket.  Here are a few pictures and my thoughts.....

Black Sapote or Zapote Negro

Sweet with a custardy texture.  Tastes similar to a persimon.  The color was really off putting.  Further research suggests that you should mix the pulp with other ingredients (like orange juice) and serve as a pudding like dessert. It sure looks like chocolate pudding. Not sure I'll be making this one a regular.

Guanabana
Photobucket Photobucket Prior to trying the actual fruit I tried some juice.  Verdict: The juice was good. It had a tart taste to it.   The guanabana fruit is not really friendly looking with it's green spikey skin.  I cut it open to reveal fluffy white flesh and large brown seeds.  Eating it proved to be a little difficult with the seeds and kind of fibrous membranes. I think I will stick to buying the juice.

Guayaba aka the Guava
I love the scent of these.  You can smell them over most other things in the store.  The flesh doesn't seem to lend itself to easy eating either but the fruit makes great agua fresca. These also come with pink centers which are really pretty.
